As fall approaches, I’m always on the lookout for my most worn summer pieces and planning easy ways to transition them into the next season. For example, this black top and Everlane jeans have been a best seller over the past few months, and they make for a solid “basics” outfit that’s easy to pair in cooler weather. With this set of basics in mind, here’s a list of 10 closet must-haves to create different smart-casual looks throughout the season with minimal pieces!
- White straight leg jeans
I’m wearing: Everlane jeans (I also have “medium blue” jeans!).
The soft cream color is perfect for trans-seasonal wear, and the solid color can also double as chinos for a casual or smart casual work closet. The high-waisted straight leg is timeless, and in the summer it’s a refreshing color that feels fresh, and in the colder months it has a cozy winter-white feel without looking too white.
- Elevated black t-shirt
I’m wearing the:Express Collarless Top
Just a simple top without having to wear it in and out all day. The slight shoulder pads also add some structure and elevate the look of a basic black t-shirt.
- Polished Band
I’m wearing the:Celine Belt sz 70 (fits just as well as our EP belt xxs)
If you tend to wear solid colors and basics, a sharp belt can really elevate an entire outfit.
The Celine belt is a splurge, but you guys know that the Edited Pieces belt is my everyday go-to! Because it’s reversible, you have double the flexibility. If your size is sold out, we will be fully restocked in September so please sign up for restocking notifications as we use that information to reorder.
- neutral pumps
I’m wearing our Edited Pieces cap toe peep toe pumps, but if you’re looking for a pair of heels in your closet, simple and stylish neutral pumps like Ann Taylor’s suede pumps or Sam Edelman’s leather pumps are great options. I have many pairs of nude heels and these are two of my favorite styles!
- striped sweater
I’m wearing the Banana Republic one above (similar), but also check out Alex Mill (worn both ways) and Sezane.
A striped knit is a great piece to wear with a striped sweater because if you drape it over your shoulders or tie it around your waist, it adds an element of pattern and texture. Or, simply pair it with straight leg jeans for an easy casual look.
If you’re going to spend a little more on a quality knit or two, I found my Sezane Leontine + Jazz sweater to be worth it. Everything from the semi-oversized, slouchy fit to the button detailing and knit fabric is well-designed and well-crafted. Alex Mill also made a beautiful chunky striped knit which can also be worn as a button-down cardigan.
- White sneakers
A clean pair of white canvas shoes is both practical and stylish for everyday errands, more casual workplaces, or traveling.
Favorites: Everlane, Veja Esplar, Sam Edelman. Check out my “Veja” stories on Instagram and this blog post to see how I make my sneakers more comfortable for long days.
The trench coat in my closet is the most timeless style that stays with me from spring to fall. A few of my trenches that I bought 5 or even 10 years ago are still being worn, but I will say that I prefer to wear loose rather than slim long trenches these days. I’m wearing the old BR here, but you can find a small trench option at J.Crew, and Mango makes a very classic mid-length dress that starts at size XXS.
My Sam Edelman loafers are still worn regularly and are a very comfortable and affordable alternative to the Gucci Jordaan loafers (my review). Wear them with jeans for casual outfits, or for business casual work occasions.
